Homer J. Simpson
The Simpsons may be just an animated cartoon about a dysfunctional American family, (famously known for its satirical commentary on various social issues), but its appeal is certainly not limited to children. I myself have watched and enjoyed the Simpsons growing up, and amazingly enough still enjoy it today. It is mainly Homer which makes the Simpsons as funny and original as it is. Homer has been criticized by many to be nothing but a lazy beer drinking, neighbor hating, selfish and greedy person. In "Homer and Aristotle", Raja Halwani talks about Homer's lust for food and drink, his poor parenting and marital skills, and his lack of practical wisdom. But despite it all, Halwani is still able to pick out some admirable traits in Homer. In "Homer Simpson: Classic Clown", Ellen Amy Cohen depicts Homer as the ever loving classic clown. Cohen believes that Homer's gullibility, low intelligence, physical appearance and child-like humor not only often makes people laugh but also allows them to see themselves as superiors. In "Individualism versus Paternalism: An Analysis of Homer J. Simpson", Dan Rousseve believes and
(Halwani, 19) Cohen believes Homer is a good father because his children obviously love him in return , therefore he must be doing something right. He resists the temptation to continue being self centered in order to restore peace within his family (Rousseve, 8). In "Homer Sweet Homediddly-Dum-Doodily" Homer and Marge are declared unfit parents by the county welfare office. Homer and his family live in a regular house on a regular street in a town called Springfield. Homer's lack of intelligence causes him to appear as a bad father and husband sometimes, but he always redeems himself in the end by committing unselfish acts for the sake of his family. (Cohen,6)In my opinion, in order for Homer to make the 180 degree turn in almost every episode shows that although he might not be very bright he has a good heart and really loves his family. Although it is true that Homer may be a bit slow minded, often acts spontaneously and has a weak spot for donuts and beer, I believe that he tries his best to be a good husband and father. In my paper, I discuss Homer's eating and drinking problem. Homer is married to Marge Simpson (a mum with crazy blue hair) and is the father of Bart (a naughty and often rebellious little boy), Lisa (genius) and Maggie Simpson (a one year old that does nothing but suck on her pacifier). It is without a doubt that Homer is obsessed with food. Marge then signs up for a marriage retreat in Catfish Lake. even then Homer made an attempt to reach for it. In another episode called "Selma's Choice", Homer gets sick when he refuses to part with a ten foot, week old sandwich he found at a company picnic. Still, he wouldn't part with it; he continued to take it to bed with him, till Marge had had enough and threw the sandwich in the trash. Yet, even after Grimes pointed it out to him, Homer still managed to take two extra bites out of the sandwich before putting it back in the bag.
