Afghanistan is a third world country that has been ravaged for the past two decades by wars, massive poverty, and horrendous crimes against humanity. This country has known little normalcy due to unstable and corrupt governments, the Russian/Afghanistan War, countless religious zealots leaders, and even an ongoing civil war between rival tribes. A reporter described Afghanistan in 1996 as, “it’s a country that has not be able to advance since the Middle Ages… with no possibility to ever become anything more.”(http://europe.cnn.com) This was stated, during the rule of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, which lasted from 1994-2001. The Taliban enacted strict laws and policies that hindered the developmental growth of Afghanistan on a social, economical, and political level. The Taliban’s repressive regime is a prime reason that Afghanistan remained a third world country, as much of the rest of the world advanced economically, socially, and politically. However, the newly formed Afghan Interim government that took control of Afghanistan on December 22, 2001 lead by Hamid Karzai, now has the opportunity to abandon its label of third world and evolve to a second world status with military, humanitarian and economic assistance from the . . .
