Alexandre Dumas and "The Count of Monte Cristo"

             World Literature Criticism states "Alexandre Dumas is regarded as one of the world's premier storytellers" (1077). For a man who was extremely fond of Napoleon Bonaparte, Dumas was a well-loved and respected writer. Some of his most famous and widely read novels are The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo. He was also one of the inspirations for the popularity of romantic dramas in the French theaters (World Literature Criticism 1077).
             Alexandre Dumas was born in France in 1802. His parents were General Thomas Alexandre Dumas of Napoleon's army and Marie-Louis-Elizabeth Labouret. Alexandre was raised by his mother in Villers-Cotterets, France, where he went to school at the local parochial school. As a teenager, he worked as a clerk until he became interested in theater. So in 1822, he moved to Paris to start a career in writing stage plays. In 1825 he wrote his first play called La chasse at l'amour with his partners Adolphe du Leuven and Pierre-Joseph Rousseau. After publishing a few more plays, Dumas met an actress named Ida Ferrier and fell in love with her. They were married in 1840 but soon split up in 1844. After the divorce, Dumas met a man named Auguste Marquette, with who he became partners. Soon after, Dumas wrote his famous novel, The Count of Monte Cristo. He wrote The Count of Monte Cristo after Dumas read an inspiring book by Jacques Peuchet about a search for revenge called Memories tires des archeves de la police de Paris. After going on a few tours for his books, his life calmed down and he ended up becoming poor in the early 1860s because of his overspending. In 1807, Dumas died in his son's home (World Literature Criticism 1077-1078).
             The Count of Monte Cristo is a book about a man in the early 1800's named Edmond Dantes who was unfairly arrested for being accused of spying for Napoleon. But all he did was accept a request from his dying captain and be a very lucky and happy man. He was sent to ...
