The Taming of the Shrew
The Taming of the Shrew begins with two sisters, Katherine, viewed as a shrew, and viewed Bianca, as the perfect one. However, as the play continues, we start to see the true personality of each of the two sisters and their roles and personalities completely turn around. Shakespeare introduces the two sisters during the first two acts. Although her father calls her a shrew, Katherine has a deeper character than one might think. From the beginning we see that she is always placed second in her father's heart and hated by everyone. Bianca, on the other hand, is acknowledged as the favorite, the perfect daughter. When Katherine recognizes her sister's approach, she is hurt and seeks revenge. This is exemplified when Katherine says, "I will go sit and weep/ Till I can find occasion of revenge" (II.i.38-9). Her transformation that she goes through near the end of the play is not in her character, but in her attitude. At the end of the play, her negative attitude becomes positive. The play opens with Baptista's words of embarrassment towards Katherine when he offers Bianca to the two men, Gremio and Hortensio. Gremio's first impression of Katherine is gi
Ironically, as the play comes to an end, Bianca, not Katherine, comes off as the shrew. She starts to be seen as a stupid, yet crafty woman who only carrying about herself. At this point Katherine must be extremely embarrassed; she is talked about on the streets like she is a product that her father can not get rid of. " The difference of the personality of the two sisters brings out the irony of this play. Their two personalities slowly switch as the play progresses. He is basically saying that he wants Katherine off his hands and out of his home. However, she does have some reasoning behind her behavior when we learn that Baptista tells Bianca's suitors that he can not marry off Bianca until he marries off Katherine. However, as the play goes on, we begin to see who Bianca really is, and how she constantly takes advantage of her father favoring her, not respecting Katherine's feelings. The fact that Katherine from here on does not use force against anyone she speaks to anymore tells us that Katherine is no longer the shrew she was. In the last Act it is easy to see how Katherine and Bianca's personalities are switched. Petruchio, unlike anyone else, is able to respond to Katherine's rude and careless statements without having to yell or put her down. He calmly talks to her to cool her down.
