Death of a Salesman & The Crucible comparison
Death of a Salesman and The Crucible have both similarities and differences in their plots. In both plays, the main character ( Willy in Death of a Salesman and Putnam in The Crucible ) had an affair. In both cases it led to tension in the family and troubled the main characters greatly. Both were quite tragic and the main character lost his life. One difference was that Death of a Salesman was very slow at times, while The Crucible was fast-paced. The plot of Death of a Salesman spanned about two days, The Crucible's plot took place over months. Death of a Salesman takes place in the 1920s in a busy city in New York, while The Crucible takes place much earlier, in 1692, and in the small village of Salem, M
The children in the two plays were not comparable because Proctor's offspring aren't ever presented to us. However, worrisome Linda didn't have a clue her husband had an affair, while strong, forgiving Elizabeth knew every detail. They both made a conscious choice to die. In such an atmosphere truth is often hard to come by. The conflicts and themes of the two stories are quite different. All the girls ran around crying witch about everyone they didn't like, and got away with it! People were hung with no substantial proof at all that they loved and served the devil! That conflict obviously goes beyond just Proctor's inner feelings. The Crucible had a lot of inner conflict in it as well. However, there was plenty of outer conflict as well. Willie in Death of a Salesman was an older, not quite sane businessman, and Proctor in The Crucible was a thirty something, level-headed farmer. This wishful thinking only hurt him in the long run,. In conclusion, they are both quite similar underneath the surface of the plots and settings. They both had a lot of inner turmoil and regrets about their affairs and what they could have done for their families, and neither of their deaths were accidental. I think the theme of The Crucible is the danger of mass hysteria and delusion. The wives of these two men, Elizabeth Proctor and Linda Loman, both played important roles in the plays and cared deeply about their husbands.
