Theme of Jane Eyre

             would you be mad if you were not treated equally? When you are not treated equally, you rebel. It would be different if you were a woman in the 1800s. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte is an unforgotten tale of love and independence. The theme is fighting for independence to get respect. Jane Eyre, the heroine of the story, sturggles to be a unique and respected female. Jane was rebellious in her actions when she wanted to be equal to men. She dreamed of independence from the male chauvinist world of the 1800s.
             Jane was a young unloved orphan girl, who lived with an aunt who disliked her. Jane quarrels and then rebels with her aunt because she is not treated like on of her aunt's children. As she turned into an adult, her young rebellious self stayed with her. Jane also said to her aunt that she would never call her aunt by the title of aunt. Jane said that she would never forgive her aunt because she was so cruel to Jane. She resolves her conflicts by fighting for her rights.
             Jane came to Thornfield because she wanted to be the governess of Mr. Rochester's ward, Adele. Jane doe snot want to be like Mr. Rochester's mistresses, with their fancy gowns and jewels. After she and Mr. Rochester are married, Jane still wants to be Adele's governess. Jane is not willing to give up her independence, when she refuses to marry Mr. Rochester.
             Another example of Jane' rebellious ways is thwne she left MR. Rochester. She leaves him because she does not want to be dependent on him like his other mistresses. In fact, she does not want to be a mistress. After Mr. Rochester's wife died, Jane came backe because she still loved Mr. Rochester. Jane tells Mr. Rochester, "I am my own mistress." (Pg.488) This quote proves her independence and autonomy. Jane marries Mr. Rochester because he realized that Jane wanted to be treated equally like a normal person.
