Eminem Controversey
Eminem has been right in the middle of many heated discussions since the drop of his album “The Slim Shady LP”. Many people believe that Eminem is brain washing today’s youth with his lyrics, but is he? Or is Eminem just another character being portrayed by Marshall Mathers III. Is Marshall any different than some of the movie stars that go on screen and change from a normal human being to a killer? Many people are trying to prove that he is different; they want Eminem out of the music industry and out of show business altogether. But things don’t exactly seem to be going their way. Marshall just keeps selling more and more records, and in November 2002 he made his big screen debut in the hit movie 8-Mile. Many people are also asking, is Marshall Mathers really the bad boy the he plays in his music and movies? Although Marshall has faced gun and assault charges, many believe that he is nowhere near the violent, hateful, homophobic person that he plays. Some actually view Marshall as a loving, caring father who is nowhere near the character that he plays in his music. By examining both sides of this controversy, we can see whether Eminem’s lyrics are a detriment to society or harmless entertainment. . . .
Even though vulgar language can be heard almost everywhere Marshall doesn’t need to include the vulgarity in nearly every song he writes. ”Let me give you a quick reality check. “Mathers, 27, had pleaded guilty to carrying a concealed weapon in February before Macomb County Circuit Judge, Antonio Viviano. Shortly after, Marshall appeared in court again for brandishing a pistol during an incident with another Detroit group. He moved around from place to place before settling along the 8-mile Highway in Detroit. They really don’t agree with the things kids can see in Eminem’s music videos. Marshall is obviously a good father or he wouldn’t have the right to spend any time at all with his daughter Hailie. If people think Marshall shouldn’t be allowed to write about the things that he does, then movie stars shouldn’t be allowed to kill someone or commit crimes during movies, and authors shouldn’t be able to write about it in a book. I like the rhythm, I like the attitude, and I can imagine if I was a young kid now, I’d like that”(CNN June 14, 2001). So is Marshall really a just a clever artist or is he the violent, homophobic, and misogynistic person that GLAAD makes him out to be? Then there is the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) who is all over Marshall and his music. But the openly gay pop star Elton John thinks differently. It’s not even right that someone can point a finger at Marshall and say it’s his fault that their son or daughter is doing drugs or committing a crime.
