Is this how you see the play Romeo and Juliet?

The Microsoft Encarta 2001 Dictionary describes tragedy as, “a serious play with a tragic theme, often involving a heroic struggle and the downfall of the main character.” The play Romeo and Juliet is one that illustrates tragedy in many scenes, such as, how Juliet was destined to marry someone else, when Romeo did not see the letter of a proposed duel from Tybalt; when Romeo did not receive the letter about Juliet’s true state of health; and how Romeo and Juliet’s love didn’t change their families’ hatred of each other until Romeo and Juliet were killed although even in the Baz Lurhmann film, after the deaths of Romeo and Juliet, the families still hated each other. All the catastrophes were caused because of the love of two star-crossed lovers, ignoring their families’ hatred of each other, but {at least in Franco Zeffirelli’s film} their families realised upon the deaths of Romeo

. . .

All of these examples show what a tragic story Romeo and Juliet is. In many countries, daughters have been given, as gifts to other man, like slaves. In the end the conflict was too great and both Romeo and Juliet believed they could not live without each other and they therefore suicided. Juliet maintained her relationship with Romeo even with the knowledge that her family would not accept Romeo as he was from the family with whom they had fought for years. All slave cases are tragedies, even this one. O be some other name!”

Despite this background Romeo and Juliet planned to marry.

Lastly, the downfall of the main characters {Romeo and Juliet} and persistence of hatred between the families {in the Baz Luhrmann film} was in my mind the biggest tragedy of the story. This shows the struggle of the heroes. It would have been easier to give up the fight for love. Romeo then killed himself and on Juliet’s awakening, finding Romeo dead, and believing she could not live without him, committed suicide herself. The tragedy in this is the fact that if he had received the letter, he would have steered clear of Tybalt, and not greeted him in a friendly manner, with the encounter resulting in the deaths of Mecutio and Tybalt

Thirdly, Romeo did not receive the letter about Juliet’s true state of health.

Firstly, was the tragedy that Juliet could not in her parent’s wishes marry someone of her choice.

Secondly, the letter that should have reached Romeo to warn him, and challenge him to a duel was never received by Romeo. On page 55, Act 2 Scene 2 line 40 to line 42, Juliet states,

“What’s Montague? Is it nor hand nor foot,

Nor arm nor face, nor any other part

Belonging to a man.
