Eisenhower
President Dwight D. Eisenhower was the Supreme Allied Commander during the 4 most formative years in American history. He lead the troops onto the beaches of Normandy and through the Battle of the Bulge successfully. He was also a man that was morally opposed to war. Eisenhower believed that war was never justified and war was the result of mans inability to civilly work out their differences. President Eisenhower said "Possibly my hatred of war blinds me so that I cannot comprehend the arguments that its advocates adduce. But, in my opinion, there is no such thing as a preventative war...War begets the conditions that beget further war. President Eisenhower successfully got America through the roughest part of the Cold War years without any military conflict. I choose to look at President Eisenhower not only because he is my favorite president, but because he witnessed first-hand W.W.II. Unlike their European counterparts, Americans came out of World War II with a positive view
Hitler killed 15 million people in the Holocaust. Although this war was seen as the most just of all we have to ask ourselves "does the end justify the means?" I have to say that I thought and thought about this and couldn't come up with an answer. The period of World War II until today represents a war of morality and uncompromised unity. I thought about this and then applied it to my bumper sticker. For this I think action on the part of the United States is necessary. Government propaganda, economic prosperity and Hollywood's glamorization gave Americans a very unreal and sheltered version of the harsh realities of war. II was a just war and one that had to be fought? I tied President Eisenhower in because he was involved in two major American wars, particularly W. So I do believe war is justified in some cases to SOLVE conflict as quickly as possible but I would never say a war like Vietnam is justified. If we focused on loving people and the characteristics that all humans have we would be less likely to focus on our different morals and ideologies. The other things I thought about was the idea that children in some countries have never experienced one day of their lives without war. Hitler may have taken over the world if not stopped. If we could say that we truly loved more and judged less this world would be full of less conflict and more tolerance. Too many times we focus on solving the immediate problem but don't think about finding out how to change the two sides opinions of each other.
