Suspense in Hamlet

In this essay I am going to explore the way that Shakespeare has written the play 'Hamlet' and also the devices he uses to create suspense. I will also try and analyse the dramatic impact the linguistic style and the devices have on an audience watching or reading the play. Throughout the play, Shakespeare demonstrates the many qualities that Hamlet has. He demonstrates Hamlet as an intellectual character that uses words to fight his enemies. The fact that Hamlet uses a senile act, "To put an antic disposition on", to fool his enemies proves that he is in fact an intellectual character. This would be a way that Shakespeare has thought to create suspense; the unpredictability of Hamlets behaviour is full of suspense. It leaves us thinking what will he do next, and where will this act get him later on in the play. He is different from the stereotypical view of a heroin. This presentation makes us as an audience conform to Hamlet. This is how Shakespeare has moulded our perception of Hamlet. The ghost of Hamlets father appears to Horatio, Barnardo, and Marcellus twice during the night, it says nothing to them despite their valiant efforts to question it. This would be one of Shakespeare's devices of creating suspense on the

The king in an attempt to do away with the threat of Hamlet hence securing his own safety slips an intoxicant into Hamlet's drink in the event that the latter may come after him. " These are the first words he says to Hamlet. Hamlet is a play about honour, love and revenge. Forty thousand brothers could not with all their quantity of love make up my sum" This is a very profound line from Hamlet, which proves that when he said he never loved Ophelia the first time he never really meant it literally. With this incident we can now tell that Hamlet is greatly infuriated and we can prejudge the events and his actions thereafter. This usually implies a phenomenal or determining scene in the prelude to the pinnacle of the play. Although this has been successfully carried out we feel that Hamlet should still be alive to cherish the moment of his victory. Forty thousand brothers could not with all their quantity of love make up my sum. "So art thou to revenge when thou shalt here. It is also humorous Revenge is the main theme of this play. During the duel, there is a sudden twist as the king attempts to poison Hamlet through his drink, but all is in vain. In Act V Scene I, Hamlet walks into the scene of a burial and its dramatically ironic that he doesn't know whose grave it is.
