Frankenstein: Molded

Man and other living creatures that possess passion and emotion struggle between the forces of good and evil. In Frankenstein written by Mary Shelley, Victor Frankenstein creates a hideous creature of great stature and inhuman strength, making him not only with human parts but also with human's ability to reason and feel. Throughout the monster's life until the death of his creator, he is driven towards evil due to Frankenstein and society's refusals to accept him, jealousy and anger, and the denial of a companion. Victor and the world make assumptions about the monster, perceiving him as a threat and a "demonical corpse" (43). "Unable to endure the aspect of the being [he] create[s]," Victor disowns the monster and flees from his responsibility to lead him in the proper direction. Left alone to fend for himself, he is immediately pushed away by the villagers when he attempts to gather food. The monster retreats to a low hovel, "however miserable, from the clemency of the season, and still more from the barbarity of man" (88). Finding solace in the woods, he values the gentleness and simplicity of the DeLacey family, though he never gains respect. Remaining secluded from society, the monster's attempt to socialize and prov

Once Frankenstein dies, the monster feels that he has won triumph and conquered revenge. For the remainder of his life, the monster seeks revenge by controlling Frankenstein's life and leading him on a wild goose chase. Losing the necessity of companionship, the monster suffers with loneliness, having no one who could exactly relate to his struggles in life. Victor has some sympathy for the monster and begins the creation of the monster's companion, but bitterly destroys it before its completion. The monster, "polluted by crimes and torn by the bitterest remorse," believes that he can only "find rest. The evil, which develops from the monster's anger, causes him to murder Henry Clerval, Victor's best friend, and Elizabeth, Victor's wife. In a final act of rejection, a frightened father shoots the monster, mistaking the monster's attempt to save his little girl from drowning. Not only is the monster not accepted in society, but also he is alone and has no one to share his feelings. He escapes north where the human population is scarce, so he can die alone. Having learned from Felix how to work mischief, he places the locket in Justine's pocket, and she is later executed for murder. Promising to end his vengeful acts, the monster instructs Victor to create a female companion as a compromise. Finally conquering peace, he can be delivered from the miserable life that his creator bestowed upon him. If Victor or even society would have made an attempt to express care and concern for the monster, he might have not committed such devious acts.
