Gambling

In the world of the social problems industry (SPI), timing is everything. Pushing

your problem in the public eye to gain more attention and prevalence, after all, society

can only handle so much. As luck would have it, the “Casino” issue is something that has

really gotten Wausau’s attention in the last few months. It seems like pretty much

everybody in the area is willing to through in their two cents. The debate continues to go

on long after the referendum did not pass, but will the claims-makers ever see the error of

Claims-makers

It seems that anybody with a pulse makes a claim, in some form, about the idea of

a casino in their community. It seems that most of the secondary claims-makers are

against a casino because they really don’t want to do any research, they just want to toss

in their own beliefs. A lot of different individuals and organizations are trying to put the

blame on everybody, but the person responsible. We also can not count out the brave

souls that talk about the positive things that a casino could bring to a community. The

primary claims-makers are people like Dan Veroff, d

. . .
Community is going to care less if somebody just come out and says that casinos

are bad because you may lose money. In 1997 he lost $21,000 to one slot

machine in two days. And why not, everybody

loves a good atrocity tale. It’s just that there’s not much to do in Wausau if

you don’t like sitting in a dim lit, smoke filled, bar.

It’s hard for these solutions to extend from the frame of the problem because it really

relies heavily on the individual. Most of all, it is the casino

that benefits from people’s misfortune. The image of that poor guy who gambled his family’s entire

lifesavings away or perhaps it’s the drunk, who could turn his luck around, if he just wins

the next hand of blackjack. The idea that somehow, some day, we will control our

gambling is the great obsession of every compulsive gambler. He sometimes played two slot

machines at a time, all night, until the boat docked at 5 a. Without giving the reader

some visual images or raw facts, you can wear all the buttons in the world and it just

won’t matter. During the several years of gambling

in that casino. Some of my fondest memories of bonding with my brother have come sitting

at a blackjack table. Some people just think the

glass is half full. I mean, what is the big deal? So you lose $20, it’s not the end of the

world. People that are against a casino feel that bringing one into

the community will cause an increase in crime, gambling, and drinking problems.
