Entering a public forum: Problem of Illegal street racing
A world of fast cars, modified engines, customized body kits, and the adrenaline pumped thrills of racing is a calling not only to hot-blooded young males but to young women as well. The craze about modified high-performance engines in cars for use in racing has been around for ages, but since the release of the movie Fast and the Furious and sequel 2Fast 2Furious, there has been a major increase in the sport of illegal street-racing. Illegal street-racing presents a major problem in our country. Besides the fact that illegal street-racing involves speeds usually in excess of 120 miles per hour down public roadways, hence breaking the speed limit laws, the number of fatalities and injuries cssaused by illegal street-racing has increased greatly each passing year. In an article from the New York Times, George Blumberg states that according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of deaths among 13 to 19-year-olds in the United States. In 2002 there were a reported 5,933 teenagers killed in motor vehicle accidents throughout the nation. Parents of young teens, especially those with new licenses, need to talk with their children about driving safely and inform them about things that could happen if they partake in a street race. In order to begin alleviating the real street racing problem we must do at least two things; first, we need to educate the youth about the consequences and dangers of illegal street racing; and second, we need to create more designated racing tracks where legal "street-style" racing can take place. With $8,000 in modifications, the car is mostly for show". There will always be those who will disobey the laws and continue to race illegally, but those people are largely the minority. I see too many people, young and old alike, that just look at what is in front of them while driving and not to the sides and rear (this is why rear-view mirrors were invented). Many of the car wrecks that happen from street races are just as brutal and deadly as those caused by drunk driving and would help deter drivers from entering into these dangerous situations. Instead of using those actual items since they could cause much damage or injury, hay-stacks could be used to cushion the impact during a crash just like in other styles of racing. The courses that most states require drivers to take before owning a license often focus mostly on alcohol use and driving. In order to take these illegal races off of the streets there needs to be someplace for racers to take their cars, to show them off and take on the competition, that is both legal and safe. In an interview with Superstreet magazine, one female street-racer said "I go to legal events. It is not the car enthusiasts, or the tuner companies, or even movies like 2Fast 2Furious that create this widespread problem of illegal street racing. One way to fix this problem would be to incorporate some of the "street's hazards" in the designs of drag strips; such as medians, trash-cans, and things of the sort.
