The Raven
In the beginning it is very clear he falls asleep reading a book, then is awaken by a knocking on his door. Line 3 has alliteration, repeating the 'n' sound. Then things are somewhat gothic and dark. He begins to miss his wife Lenore, thinking of her being in heaven with angels. His purple curtains can show richness and death. And with the visitor at his door, may seem to him as death is coming to take him away. He apologizes to the visitor for not going to the door and opening it sooner. Yet when he opened the door the only thing he saw was darkness and not
Perfume starts to come into play, like the one Lenore wore. Poe sits and talks to the Raven, as if the bird holding power over Poe. He refers to the raven as "she" making him think it may be the spirit of his wife. 'As my Hopes have flown before', he could be talking about his wife being taken away from him in death. Stanza 6 is clear by him jut hearing noises of the wind against the window. Line 26, 'dreams no mortals ever dream, he was thinking of dying and afterlife. The Raven keeps repeating the word 'Nevermore' as a way of tormenting and driving people crazy. I loved this poem, among many from Mr. The raven then flies in, but he uses the words 'in stepped'. Stanza 11, Poe thinks that everything was taken away from this bird and it has nothing left to show for, that's why he say Nevermore. "Angels name her Lenore", is Poe saying that this isn't the actual name of his wife? At the end Poe is telling the bird to leave him alone.
