Values Worth Fighting For

When a country goes to war they are fighting to defend what they believe in. Each battle and every victim helps decide how the opponent will have to compromise at the end of the war. But why must they compromise? And how significant is every dead soldier when you're fighting for principle? The values I think that are worth fighting for are freedom, love and pride. These beliefs are inspired by three documents that prove the devotion of Americans to our country- The Gettysburg Address, and war letters sent home from George Rarey and Sullivan Ballou. Freedom is something we have been defending throughout American History. As said by Abraham Lincoln "...that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom-and that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth" (Gettysburg Address, paragraph 1). Freedom as a response to democratic principle is a code thought to bring equality, which is essential to our suc


The other value I think is worth fighting for is Pride. We fight to institute protection for our loved ones so they may flourish. If we use our abilities to protect values such as freedom, to ensure American citizens that their independence and privileges will always be something they can expect and keep their pride in; then America will continue to be the founder of families and communities that generate love and happiness. Rarey writes in hopes that "there will be no war for Damon [his son]" (Rarey, paragraph 6). To support our beliefs about the United States. Lincoln also proposed to dedicate a portion of their battle ground as a resting place for those who gave their lives so that the nation might live (Gettysburg Address, paragraph 4). His job was to help make a safer country for his son. It was Major Ballou's pride in his country that had him include "and I am willing-perfectly willing- to lay down all my joys in this life, to help maintain this government and to pay that debt" (Ballou, paragraph 3), in a letter to his wife. Rarey had a family to dedicate himself to. Disregarding of course, the inevitable glitches of embezzlement. Basically what we are fighting for is to maintain what we have. He respected that those people were fighting for the continuing freedom of the people in our country. To go into war to defend our political ideas is perfectly necessary especially under the circumstances of the Iraq and American conflicts.
