Many years ago the government encouraged people to move into the village to be closer to hospitals and stores. When the people began to live in towns, they brought animals with them, as the size of herds increased, the livestock around villages became concentrated, which combined to the damage and destruction of pasture. The land was stripped of any vegetation, when it rained the soil had no protection and the surface layers would wash away, the land eroded and became a desert. After a while Nigerians learned to farm and this became the main food source. "In many cases, traditional and durable rain-fed agricultural methods no longer are suitable under present-day conditions... Strong demographic pressure has increased the demand on land resources, aggravating cash-crop farming..." The Nigerians live in poverty and are careless when it comes to farming.
