In the skin of a lion - Love theme

             In the novel 'In the Skin of a Lion' the theme of love plays a big part. As you read through the book you can see different types of love start to appear. There's love created from power, love between man & woman, also love between a child & parent. Or the lack of love between a child & the parent like in Patrick's and Hazen's case.
             Most people probably wouldn't describe their relationship as an ideal or typical father-son relationship. It seems to be more of a co-worker or boss-employee type of relationship. When I got trained at my job at civic center, it was more showing me how to do things and not as much communications. I had to watch my supervisor do the job and then try it myself. Same with Patrick and his father, there's not much communication between them. The book didn't show any parts where they actually had a conversation outside of work. Patrick's father didn't teach him anything; he had to learn by himself from watch his father. "Hazen Lewis did not teach his son anything, no legend, no base of theory. The boy watched him prepare charges or pack equipment neatly back into his wooden case." (p. 18) Also, "It was strange for Patrick to realize later that he had learned important things, he knew how much a piece of dynamite the size of a bullfrog could destroy. But he absorbed everything from a distance. The only moments his father was verbal was when calling square dances..." (p.19) This lack of love from his father, arguably, could be the reason why he turned out the way he did. With no real direction in life...just riding along with whoever he meets or confused "He was an abashed man, an inheritance from his father."
