A Rose for Emily

In the short story "A Rose for Emily", by William Faulkner uses symbolism to get the meaning of the title of this story across to the reader. Though there are many interpretations that can be made from the title of this story, my interpretation of the title is the comparison of Homer Barron to being Miss Emily's rose.Miss Emily didn't have a very peaceful adolescence. Emily's father was very abusive and neglectful towards her. Her father never let her experience the joys of doing things on her own and the feelings of love and friendship. Whenever she thought she had these feelings towards someone her father would say, they're not good enough for you. Emily only knew the feelings her father let her feel. After the death of her father, I think she was free to go out and explore the world her father wouldn't let her live, and oddly enough that's when Homer Barron comes into play (Faulkner 31).

This crushed Emily's heart and threw her over the edge where she will now go to the extreme to keep herself from ever loosing Homer Barron, her love. They saw a rose colored room with rose curtains, and rose-colored lampshades. As years went by, the townies watched Emily get older and her hair get longer grayer. Homer Barron, "a Yankee, big, dark, ready man with a big voice and eyes light eyes" (Faulkner 31),had just started work in the town paving the sidewalks. The turning point and the destruction in the story for Emily is when "Homer himself had remarked - He liked men, and drank with the young men at the Elks Club, which made him not a marrying man" (Faulkner 32). Homer then left town to give Emily enough time to get her cousins out of the house. Two days after that they learned she had bought a complete outfit of men's clothing for him. In conclusion I feel Emily ended up killing Homer Barron because she didn't want to lose someone so close to her that she loved so much, or so she thought. They broke down the door and when the thick dust had settled they were floored by what they saw. After this bombshell, Emily didn't want to lose her first true love so she figured if she couldn't have him no one can. Eventually Emily died and the officials had taken the liberty to search her house and found the top floor boarded up.
