Synthesis and Characterization of (Mesitylene)tricarbonylmol

Abstract: (Mesitylene)tricarbonylmolybdenum and (chlorobenzene)tricarbonylmolybdenum were synthesized each by different methods. (mesitylene)tricarbonylmolybdenum was produced by a direct method under harsh conditions. (Chlorobenzene)tricarbonylmolybdenum was made by an indirect method under mild conditions. The transition metals chromium, tungsten, and molybdenum commonly form complexes with benzene rings. The metal forms a bond with the six electrons in the ? system of the benzene ring. In this experiment two of such molybdenum complexes are synthesized: (mesitylene)tricarbonylmolybdenum and (chlorobenzene)tricarbonylmolybdenum shown in figure 1.Figure 1. (mesitylene)tricarbonylmolybdenum (a) and (chlorobenzene)tricarbonylmolybdenum (b) Two common methods for the synthesis of these tricarbonylmolybdenum complexes are used in the experiment. Method 1 is used to synthesize (mesitylene)tricarbonylmolybdenum and method 2 is used to make (chlorobenzene)tricarbonylmolybdenum. Method 1, the direct method, involves the heating of hexacarbonylmolybdenum with excess mesitylene. This method requires high reaction temperatures which can result in the decompo

IR samples were prepared using a KBr pellet. The product was then weighed and characterized. The main reaction was performed in an N2 atmosphere.
