Basketball Recruiting
For the last 15 years I've been moving up in the rankings in the world of basketball coaches in the nation. It all started in biddy basketball where I taught the kids the fundamentals, then a local high school took my services for a number of successful years, followed by a small town Division two school who I helped lead to four winning seasons. Now it's a Sunday morning and I'm sitting here watching some film from our last game of the season, when the phone rang. It was the Binghamton University Athletic director. He said, we really like what you've done in Division two. We'd really love for you to come over to Binghamton and take over the head coaching duties. You're first job is to get us three cornerstones that can put us on the map. We really need a point guard, power forward another three point shooter." Sitting in my office in amazement, listening to my dream come true, I thought to myself, "where am I going to get these players from, and how can I recruit them to come to Binghamton?" Recruiting is probably the most important thing a coach has to do. You can't win without the right combination of players, and in order to get the right mixture, you'll have to fight for each individual. After all this is division
Now I understand that Michigan is a well established program, in the Big Ten, but think about it. You will be playing against such powerhouses as Syracuse, Villanova, and North Carolina. What university will this player choose? I need to make him realize why Binghamton is the best place for him to be. It is very important to immediately establish a bond with both the athlete and the parent. It has a diversified population of around 10,000 students. You can be the one who puts Binghamton on the map. Being a former high school coach, and former division two head coach, I have connections with certain regions of the country, and certain big time universities. I found my point guards, power forwards and pure shooters. It would also help if I told her how much we care for all of our players, and tell her that if her son has any problems in school or in life that I will be there to help him out in any way possible. The same city from which greats such as Lou Alcindor, Connie Hawkins, Ernie Grunfeld, Lenny Wilkins, Red Holtzan, Billy Cunningham, and Bernard King have blossomed and have led illustrious college and professional careers. Binghamton is only a few hours away from New York City so the mother/father will be happy being close to her son or daughter.
