BNW vs. Matrix

The novel, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, and The Matrix directed by the Wachowski brothers, are very similar with respects to their characters, and settings, and yet so different at the same time. A futuristic society, based on the three principles of the state COMMUNITY, IDENTITY, and STABILITY, is what Brave New World requires there people to follow and conform to the ideals of the state and leader, and to what they believe is the "normal" way of life. The Matrix, is also a futuristic tale that's designed to overpower the human mind of not only the viewer, but the inhabitants as well. In this society, it's controlled and run by the power of technology that distracts human minds, while the body is used as an energy source to stay alive and well. The characters, and settings of Brave New World, and The Matrix can be compared and differentiated in great detail. The main characters of both Brave New World, and The Matrix are indeed similar and different. The main character in Brave New World, John the savage and Neo in The Matrix are similar as both are brought into the "real world". John the savage is taken out of his world by Bernard, and brought into the Brave New World and he discovers the world of Shakespeare. Neo is born

This is a science fiction novel and a novel of utopia. Although he's a minor role in the film, his importance is not reduced, as he's very similar to the character Bernard of Brave New World. This process is said to be "undergone voluntarily for the good of society" (Huxley) The Director of Hatcheries and Conditioning makes the major decisions, by deciding which one of the five classes the test tube baby will belong to. "I think the [illusionary] Matrix can be more 'real' than this [real] world," (Matrix, 1999) as this shows that Cypher is favouring his Matrix world over the real world. Because of that he's an outcast, and is often very lonely. I don't believe it," clearly show that he was rebelling against his society. A similarity is between the relationships in the film and novel; Cypher likes Trinity, just as Bernard liked Lenina. The characters and plots of each are distinctly fundamental to the main idea of the story, and we see two stories with both similar ways of life from the ideal eyes of a futuristic society. They're both warned of their "abnormal" behaviour, but they continue to carry on their own set way of life, and are in turn exiled. Bernard has his own vision of life; he disagrees with the Brave New World and continues to go against the society's way of life. The setting of Brave New World sets up the facade of an ideal world for the readers and it takes place in 632 A. Cypher desires to be rich and dreams of the pride of life, wanting to be someone, and he will kill and harm many people to satisfy his own selfishness. The setting of The Matrix takes place in Chicago, in the future year of 2199 but is told in the present.
