A Man of Controversy,
"The support given by United States rulers is rather in the nature of the support a rope gives a hanged man." These were words once uttered from the mouth of the Soviet Union's most ambitious and successful ruler, Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev. Khrushchev was a man that took over power in the Soviet Union very soon after Stalin's death; despite his overt criticism of the United States, he was the first ruler to actually believe that the West and the Soviet Union could get along peacefully. Despite being ousted from power by some of his most trusted followers, Khrushchev was perhaps the reason why the Russians and the Americans get along as well as they do today. His "backward" thinking started a new era for Communism; he led them to glory that was only deserving of the Soviet Union.Khrushchev was born into a very poor family located in Kalinovka, near the village of Kursk in southwestern Russia. His grandfather had worked as a serf and his father worked as a peasant and as a miner. Khrushchev received very little education in schools because his family needed him to work on the family farm. One such instance of this behavior is when Khrushchev hit his shoe on the table at the UN in New York in 1960, saying, "History is on our side, we will bury you!" Khrushchev was also known for some controversial decisions. However, one of Khrushchev's old adversaries, Georgy Malenkov, was still in power. One key change was that the use of terror against the Russian people was outlawed. A major portion of this new policy was that the improved government would do three things. er in a coalmine in the Donets Basin, which is near present-day Ukraine. He attempted to do this by emphasizing more agricultural and industrial production. Because of his inability to achieve the insane and unrealistic goals he had set in agricultural and industrial production; Khrushchev had succeeded in excluding the vast majority of the Soviet elite. However, these actions that he had been criticized for are probably the main reasons why Russia is where it is today. In 1956, Khrushchev ordered troops of the Warsaw Pact, an alliance of the Communist States, to invade Hungary. From 1953 to 1964 Khrushchev was the first secretary of the Communist Party, and from 1958 to 1964 he was the prime minister of the entire Soviet Union. It was here that he was able to reach the rank of Lieutenant General. It sometimes would even destabilize an entire government; thus the de-Stalinzation campaign threatened the Soviet control over its own satellite nations. Khrushchev then removed Nikolay Bulganin from his post as prime minister and assumed the post himself. As a result of Khrushchev's ambitious promise many of Khrushchev's opponents in the Presidium, or the Politburo, tried to remove him from power while he was on a trip. After Stalin died in March of 1953, Khrushchev rose to power as the leader of the Communist Party and sought to rebuild the world image of the Soviet Union.
