Cultural Baggage

             Going down an aisle at a grocery store you see things like Mexican or Italian foods. The wide array of different cultural styles and flavors. You can't help but ask what dish am I? I don't really have a specific taste. I'm more like a gumbo or stew. A vast collection of German, Italian, Irish, and Hungarian. Not being able to distinguish has made it hard for me to relate to other people. Like when I receive a flyer in my dorm room that says, "come celebrate Latino Heritage!" it makes me realize more that I don't have a stable ethnic background. It feels as though the times have really changed quite a bit. It used to be that being an "American," assimilation was the orderly thing to do. Yet I find myself an outsider to new immigrants.
             According to Nathan Glazer a professor of sociology and education emeritus at Harvard University, "There are obvious differences between the last great wave of European immigration and the current wave of Latino American, Middle Eastern, Asian and Caribbean immigration. The first is the effect of two world wars in the promoting the rapid assimilation of the earlier European immigrants; the second is the surprising change in American law and practice, starting in the 1960's, that makes multiple citizenship-and by implication, multiple national identities –more common and acceptable." This makes it easier to find yourself wondering where do I belong in this new era. Being mixed with a large amount of German and Italian I would find myself identifiying myself as German because my father's side of the family was all German. I would start to engage in my family tree and find names like Fredrick Kruegar, Agustus, and Dorothy. I started to have a large rise in pride for my strong ties to a German background.
