Many things about Lord of the Flies can be compared to several different philosophers throughout history. Before the boys split from each other, Ralph created a rotation of the fire watch, so it wouldn't burn out in case anyone was to see the fire and rescue them. Charles Montesquieu, a Frenchman born in 1689, believed there was a necessary relationship between social divisions and different powers. In his book, Leviathan, he wrote that "man is selfish and will battle for power. Ralph and the other boys came from a military school, where they probably couldn't speak there mind like they would have liked, so giving the boys the right to speak whenever they held the conch shell, gave the boys some freedom of speech. Also, he felt that everyone had the right to speak their mind. These ideas of government are still used today all over the world. " In one scene Jack had the twins say, "The chief has spoken" to convey that he has the power and he is the boss. Before too long, he didn't hardly have to do any work, because of all the people that he had corrupted into doing all the work for him. Thomas Hobbs was a 16th century man from England. In Lord of the Flies, it was necessary to show the separation between Ralph and Jack to convey how they lead two different kinds of governments and to show what Ralph did not want to become like and why he did not conform to Jack's ways. Even these 10-year-olds created examples of monarchy, dictatorship, rotation of jobs, and freedom of speech, in order to organize everything on the island. Though the twins had both seen Ralph hiding, they told Jack they had seen nothing.
