Yea Or Nay
Dear honorable gentleman, the strenuous road to full and virtuous independence has come to an ultimate crossroad. We, representing all New Yorkers, have been given the vital decision regarding the ratification of the proposed Constitution. We have pledged to promote what is best for our people, and the optimum way to proceed in this manner is by voting yea to the Constitution. The Constitution provides a plethora of benefits that the current Articles of Confederation failed to furnish; the most important of the benefits is the superbly constructed plan for the division of power between branches of government. In addition, many other lesser powers were granted to the government that have the potential to promote this country to the zenith of world powers in a relatively short time. Quite simply, the Articles of Confederation failed miserably at distributing powers properly. Benjamin Franklin boldly stated, “It is absurd the pretending to be Lovers of Liberty while they grudge paying for the Defence of it” (Doc 2). Moreover, the Constitution also has provisions for issues other than the distribution of power. The Constitution consists of advantage upon advantage for the American people to reap and grow as a nation. This land can be distributed and new states can be founded to amplify the power of our nation (Doc 5). This must be changed, and one of the primary focuses of the Constitution is on the balancing between authoritarianism and anarchy. Even New Hampshire agrees to the ratification of the Constitution; now, more than ever, we must not become the obstruction in the entire country’s path to glory (Doc 12). Furthermore, to disperse your fears about the birth of a tyrant as the leader of our government, the Constitution includes that the President will have a limited term and will be liable to impeachment, trial, and even removal from office, thus preventing the tyranny that we experienced under British rule (Doc 10). Even the men that oppose the ratification of the Constitution say that “it is true there may be danger in delay,”; thus proving that the entire nation recognizes that the Articles of Confederation are no more than a temporary form of government (Doc 6). Alexander Hamilton appropriately states, “The more I dread the consequences of the nonadoption of the Constitution by any of the other States, the more I fear an eventual disunion and civil war” (Doc 11). We would live in infamy if we became the men who prevented the ratification of the Constitution in favor of the Articles of Confederation. In conclusion, Yea it is, for the Constitution, and remember gentlemen, united we stand--divided we fall (Doc 13)! . The Constitution will grant the national government the powers that it requires in order to work suitably. The current Articles of Confederation do not provide the federal government the power of taxation, one of the most basic powers of any federal government. Finally, many people think shabbily of the New York legislature; let us disperse the perception of being “a set of selfish knaves and ninnyhammers” by saying yea to the ratification of the revolutionary Constitution (Doc 3)! Avoiding embarrassment and blame will also be beneficial for the great state of New York, because if we vote nay, then we will be the lone opposition and the sole cause for retaining of the horrendous Articles of Confederation. The provisions for amendments of the Constitution provide for an adaptable government that is meant to last and modernize; this all-important clause in the Constitution exemplifies the great foresight that its creators used (Doc 9).
