Area 51

             Groom Lake, better known as Area 51, is only two-hour drive north from Las Vegas at the foot of Groom Mountains. The name "Area 51" supposedly came from an old map on the Nevada Test site. Lying on 144 square miles of a dried up lakebed in the Great Basin Desert, the area looks like nothing more than a conglomerate of aircraft hangers, storage facilities, and runways. But a closer look reveals more interesting details. The first thing to stand out is the runway on the southern end of the complex, measuring more than 3 miles long. On one side of the runway are a number of hangers. For decades, the air force denied even the existence of this base and actively bought up the 9,000 acres of surrounding land to prevent people from getting to close. All cameras and film that people have is taken away if your in the area, as of any sketches will be taken away too. Also, the air space around the base is off-limits even too most military pilots. This secrecy has led many to conclude that top-secret testing was going on at the base. In 1994 an Air Force spokesman admitted that the base existed, saying, "the Air Force does have facilities within the complex near the dry lakebed of Groom Lake. The complex is used for training the effectiveness of the US military forces." Groom Lake was surveyed in 1944 and constructed in 1954 under the control of the CIA. Throughout the years, it is believed that the DIA, DNA and DOE have all participated in some activities on-site.
             In the early 1960's the Atomic Energy commission detonated nuclear bombs in the area used the area. Most activities at Groom Lake are assumed to concern top-secret flight technologies. There are also the unsubstained rumors about other aircraft on the site.
