The Party uses psychological manipulation, by bombarding its subjects with psychological stimuli designed to replace any and all independent thought. The giant telescreens found in every citizen's room displays a constant stream of propaganda designed to give the illusion that the Party’s failures are in fact successes. The telescreens also monitor behavior. Everywhere they go, Oceania’s citizens are continuously reminded that the authorities are watching them; “‘Big Brother Is Watching You’, the caption beneath it read.” The Party undermines family structure by recruiting children into an organization called the Junior Spies, which brainwashes and encourages them to spy on their parents and report any instance of disloyalty to the Party. Psychological manipulation; physical control; information regulation; and the deconstruction of language, is all that is necessary to dominate a nation and its people. George Orwell’s 1984 was a warning for what was to come if history continued to repeat itself. They look for any sign of disloyalty or unrest, to the point that even the slightest spasm or twitch could lead to an arrest. This idea is seen in the creation of Newspeak, which the Party has introduced to replace English. And in controlling the past, the Party can justify all of its present actions.

One of the Party’s most important objectives is the limitation of language. The Party is constantly refining and perfecting Newspeak, with the ultimate goal that no one will be capable of thinking up anything that might question the Party's actions. A person's own nervous system becomes his greatest enemy. Anyone who disobeys or shows the slightest disloyalty to the Party is punished by a series of systematic and brutal torture. Newspeak also makes it harder to communicate certain thoughts and ideas to other generations; “His mind hovered for a moment round the doubtful date on the page, and then fetched up with a bump against the Newspeak word doublethink. The Party uses what’s called doublethink that allows a person willingly to believe contrary ideas at the same time; “WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH. The Party is constantly watching the body language of its citizens. Ultimately, the Party kills all those who defy them, despite having brainwashed them into no longer thinking for themselves.
