Cedric Jennings Evaluation
Reading the book, A Hope in the Unseen, was and experience I will never forget. Learning the way different races deal with different situations was almost unbelievable. There were some things happening that were dealt with in different way then a white person, such as myself, would have thought it would have been dealt with. It is a completely different situation when a white person puts themselves in the shoes of a different race, that being African American in this particular novel. This is what we were forced to do when reading this book. Cedric Jennings, himself, visited the Bowling Green State University campus and talked with those students who have read the book concerning his life. However, I did not expect the person that came to campus. The Cedric in the book seemed to be very deep in thought at all times, constantly shy around superiors, and was interested in academics more than anything else. The Cedric that came to campus appeared to be someone thoroughly different. He did not seem to be shy at all. I was disappointed in the way he answered some questions in that he did not think through them before answering. He even came out and said at one point that he did not like to answer ?stuffy
Cedric was able to talk with no problem. I was told and read about his life and respect him for what he has dealt with and the accomplishments he has made. Cedric, however, was told over four weeks in advance that he was to visit our campus. I believe this was a responsibility of Cedric?s, and if he agreed to be there at a certain time, he should have been there. I do understand, however, that going for a master?s degree or doctorate, and being a first year undergraduate is two very different situations and I am sure there are different levels of stress. It would have been a different situation if Cedric would have stated his feelings or where he stood on certain matters, but he did not. It was also brought to my attention that this man overslept the morning he was to arrive at the Bowling Green State University campus and missed his first meeting here. This is not at all what I expected to see out of Cedric, in fact, it was entirely opposite. This was because he had an important paper due the last night he was there and he was to email the paper to his professor. He simply restated everything in the novel. ? academic questions, but does not mind talking about personal experiences. Therefore, in my opinion, he should have had this paper completed in advance also. This could have been the only meeting some students could have made to meet Cedric. This was upsetting to me because I believe if the school asked him to come, and paid him five thousand dollars to do so, he should have come prepared.
