American Industrial Revolution (1870-1920)
The American Industrial Revolution (1870-1920) changed the United States citizens from an agricultural people to one that was highly industrialized. They began to performed much of their work in factories and on machines. This transition took fifty years and caused a dramatic change in the nation's economic history.Many changes came about during the American Industrial Revolution (1870-1920). In 1870, the United States' population was approximately 36 million people. 70 percent of the population were farmers. In 1900, the population of the United States had been estimated at over 80 million people. This was partly due to the better life people were living because of the technological and medical breakthroughs of this era. Also, a big wave of immigrants came to the United States during this time. Between the 1880*s and 1920, a large group of people from the Jewish faith migrated from Russia and settled in the lower east side of New York City. Between 1880 and 1914, there was a big influx of people from Italy to the United States(about 3.6 million people came from Italy}. He managed to get the conspiracy charges against the Debs dropped and put on the railroad executives. George Westinghouse (1846-1914) developed many things for the railroad industry. They hired a lawyer named Darrow (1857-1938) to defend them. All of the first cars built by Ford were painted black because the color dried quicker. The growth of businesses and creation of new jobs also created some problems. This worked because it is a federal offense to stop the mail from being delivered. Charles Steinmetz (1865-1923) developed the physics theory for alternating current as opposed to direct current. The automobile industry helped the business of selling oil grow tremendously. In 1901, there were approximately three hundred trusts in the United States, with about $320 million invested. During the Civil War he invested in a local refinery and by 1865 was engaged full time in the oil business. His steel was also considered of the finest quality. He never went to college and attended only three months of high school.
