Imagine electricity so powerful it can shoot through the air 130 feet, yet safe enough to travel through a person and light a bulb in his hand. It’s not fiction with modern electronics. Most of today’s modern electronic discoveries have their roots in the writings and patents of one genius who very few people know. Radios, blenders, fans, neon lighting, hair dryers, X-rays, fluorescent bulbs, speedometers, the automobile ignition system, and the basics behind cellular phones, radar, electron microscopes, and the microwave oven all seem to have listed inventors like Marconi, Roentgen, or Edison, but visions of all of these and many more inventions were in the mind of a man named Nicola Tesla long before any of them had otherwise been heard of. With the Westinghouse Company, investors and construction crews Tesla designed the first hydro electric plant sending thousands of horsepower in electricity to cities all over the east coast. Tesla became very passionate about mathematics and science, and went on to study engineering at the renowned Austrian Polytechnic School at Graz. Tesla was employed by companies throughout Europe to improve their DC generation facilities, but was interested in gaining investor attention in his idea. Tesla now turned to the dream of his youth, to harness the power of the great Niagara Falls. Still looking for investors, Tesla invented a few things including an arc lamp, but to little or no profitability. 50 per horse power of electrical capacity sold, but this only sparked the industrial war between Edison’s Direct Current and now Westinghouse’s Alternating Current. Edison launched his propaganda war against AC, claiming the extreme dangers of AC by such savage acts as electrocuting animals on stage with the Westinghouse generators. It was here that Tesla saw the problems with current electronics, specifically the Direct Current motor. Over 100,000 incandescent bulbs lit up the fair using AC power, and afterwards Tesla’s AC became the power of choice for the American people. Scientists and researchers today still decipher his terrible handwriting, to find clues about what’s next for modern electronics. Tesla Quickly developed and patented a working model of AC power, the system used universally throughout the world today. as a gifted inventor herself commonly devising new and easier ways of doing common household chores, while his father was a skillful writer and poet. Tesla would not stand for this, and sacrificing great wealth, tore up his original contract with Westinghouse for the generous royalties he would have received as a result of all the power now being supplied by the hydroelectric system. Later while living in Budapest, Tesla devised his idea for the Alternating Current motor, an advance in technology that would change the world.
