Racism in To Kill a Mocking Bird

‘To kill a mocking bird’ describe the differing

attitudes of three or more characters and examine

what you think Harper Lee has to say about racism both

in Maycomb county and more generally

Scout is totally without prejudice against most of Maycombs people including the black people. She manages to show adults that racism isn’t right, for example at the county jail where the men seem to suddenly come to their senses when she talks the Mr Cunningham about his ‘entailments’. She bri

. . .
He shows that he isn’t racist but just hides the fact he lives around black people through his drink, which is in fact coca-cola. ngs a fresh look at people in Maycomb compared to the fixed views most people have. He seems to think he is doing right, and believes that his way of seeing people is best and anyone, even a white person who helps black people are ‘nigger lovers’, as he calls Atticus. She thinks people should not judge by the colour of a person’s skin or their ‘history’.

Aunt Alexandra doesn’t seem to show any fixed opinion about black people which is unusual as she has very fixed views of all the Maycomb families. Where as most people in Maycomb are either racist or not, Aunt Alexandra seems to be neither as she is both prejudice against a lot of people but also is quite a fair person.

Dolphus Raymond is one of few people who actually live around or inside the black community. They should take them as they are just like Scout learns to from Atticus when he says ‘you don’t really know a person until you get up and walk around in there skin’.

Bob Ewell on the other hand is the complete opposite of Scout as he does have fixed views of black people and seems to think there is nothing wrong with racism.

I think Harper Lee uses Scout as a way of voicing her own opinion on racism. This shows he is worried he may be outcast by people like Bob Ewell in the same way as Atticus is.
