The American Civil War, which was also known as the War Between The States, in the history of United States of America was a 4 year war which began in 1861 and concluded in 1865. The war was between the Federal Government of the United States of America, and the eleven southern states that emphasized their right to become independent from the Union. The War revolved around three main issues: · Sectional Division:The Sectional Division between the North and South resulted from geographical differences. The most evident would be the sectional division between the North and South, including the differences in economy, ideals and the general ways of life. Another apparent point was the disputes between the Federal Government and the States' over the rights and power that each state possessed. The North's economy favoured the growth of cities as its economy is more dependant upon trade than agriculture. · The Conflict of Slavery:The Northerners began to view slavery as immoral in the early 1800s. After experimentation, it was found that cotton and sugar cane also flourished in the South. Southerners, however found slavery to be extremely profitable, and the considered it to be a positive good. The Northerners were given a nickname, which has stuck with them forever, "Yankee". "Yankee" protestants had ideals which encouraged modernization, which included hard work, a focus on education, economic independence and the belief that the community had the right to decide which was moral and which was immoral. ing disagreement between the Northern and Southern states. They believed their economy would collapse without slavery and they believed that "Blacks" were inferior to "Whites". They developed many tobacco plantations and, the Africans were enslaved for cheap labour.
