In Groups and Out Groups

In this essay I will discuss the Greek notions of in-groups and out groups and how they relate to confucian principle of Jen and the Hindu caste system. My understanding from the article titled "The Contextual Foundations of Interpersonal Struggle," is the people of Greek descent normally live in a close-knit unit, where a person is considered to be in the in-group or the out group. The in-group includes family, friends, and even friends of friends. Anyone outside of this group is considered to be in the out-group. This would include all of those in the community out-side of the in-group. The in-group does not interact well with the out group, and seems to have a competitiveness with the out group. This behavior is sometimes displayed even within the in-group

This group was said to be fair skinned and blue-eyed. "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. (p 65)"Confucius said that practicing Jen is not to do to another man what you yourself don't want. The group migrated to India, and became teachers, rulers, and religious leaders. The caste system dates back to 3,000 years ago. Confucianism has four basic principles. " East Asians like the Greek have sharp distinction between in-group and out group members. The groups ranged from teachers and perchers, to administrators, to traders and business men, to blacksmiths and carpenters. Confucianism as defined in the article is a philosophy of human nature that considers proper human relationships as the basis of society. In East Asia the distinction is so strict, the book states it's imperative to have an intermediary to help, one initiate a new relationship in East Asia. Because of these actions, the society became divided into four castes. The word Caste derived from Portuguese Casta, which is color. Fundamentally it means warm human feelings between people. The article mentions, "relations with the out-group members are characterized by a great deal of suspicion and mistrust.
