organelle that occupies as much as 95 percent of a cell's volume. A vacuole is very important to its cell and has many important functions. Each function is different, but all of the functions are necessary for the survival of a cell.
             There are three basic types of vacuoles. Food vacuoles are the most basic digestive compartments. They are organelles where a single cell digests its food without hydrolytic enzymes mixing with the cell's cytoplasm. Food vacuoles are first formed by phagocytosis, which is the engulfing of food particles or cell eating. Without food vacuoles, a cell could not get enough nutrients to survive. Another type of vacuole is the contractile vacuole. Contractile vacuoles are a special kind of vacuole whose main job is to pump water and other substances out of a cell to prevent the cell from bursting.
