             There are three basic types of vacuoles. Food vacuoles are the most basic digestive compartments. They are organelles where a single cell digests its food without hydrolytic enzymes mixing with the cell's cytoplasm. Food vacuoles are first formed by phagocytosis, which is the engulfing of food particles or cell eating. Without food vacuoles, a cell could not get enough nutrients to survive. Another type of vacuole is the contractile vacuole.
