The difference between Science and Pseudoscience
"I maintain there is much more wonder in science than in pseudo-science. And in addition to whatever measure this term has any meaning, science has the additional virtue, and it is not an inconsiderable one, of being true" once said Cornell University Astronomy Professor Carl Sagan. The reason science exists is to observe, identify, describe, experiment, and explain phenomena in the universe. The claim that the earth is flat is not supported by science because it requires the scientist to negate all knowledge about the earth to accept the hypothesis that the earth is flat; so it is therefore not scientific. However, the means of distinguishing a science from a pseudo-science is not simple due to the various beliefs of a person or group of people and the ideas surrounding supporting or refuting a hypothesis. It is difficult to concretely differentiate a scientific argument from a pseudo-scientific one because of contrasting views and bias present in science. Compared to a science, a pseudo-science is a theory, methodology, or practice that arises without a scientific foundation. The reasoning behind science is based on the scientific theory. The four steps of scientific methodology ar
" It is logically possibly that a cow could jump over the moon, but because it is physically impossible, it does not happen. Every day, new experiments are tested and new hypotheses formed while old theories are disproved and discarded. To reduce confirmation bias, it is helpful to keep several hypotheses in mind. Evidence might be available to disprove a hypothesis but it may be ignored because other evidence is available that will confirm the hypothesis. Issues dealing with perception, emotion, and logic arise when speaking of science and pseudo-science. People that are not Christian, however, will not agree with the evidence that I present them for the existence of God. On the other hand, a theory can be solidly disproved through the scientific method. This is rooted in beliefs based culture. This makes new experimentation difficult since nothing new can be provided to disprove an aspect to a pseudo-science. Although I can not see him, I know he exists. It would seem that science and logic coincide very nicely; this, however, is not always the case. Some view each area as a solid science and believe they can prove so by means of the scientific method. Just like artists, scientists are passionate their profession.
