Analyse how 1984 and Dorian Gray illustrate the deceptive nature of superficial appearances, and thus the uncertainty or plurality of truth.In the novels 1984 and Dorian Gray there is a constant deceptive nature and through this the plurality of truth is shown in various ways particularly with the characters Dorian Gray, and Winston Smith. The development of these key characters forms the overall meaning of the stories. The plurality of truth and the deception of appearance is shown throughout both novels in many ways. Doublethink is a key tool used by the Party in 1984. In Dorian Gray Dorian's appearance is a central theme and the deception surrounding him is key to the novels development. The plurality of truth is central theme in the novel 1984 and is key to the development of the plot. The general idea behind truth in 1984 is that truth is in the beholder. Thus something can be varied from person to person however nobody is wrong. This is shown throughout the novel. In this novel there is a central Government called the Party, it is dictatorship which governs its people very strictly. The Party uses many physical but more importantly many mental tools in order to control people and make their truth the only truth.
" This is slightly ironic because it is Lord Henry who ends up corrupting Dorian with his influence on him. This theory states that truth is all in the beholder. He tracks down Dorian and holds him at gunpoint however Dorian uses his deceiving appearance to say that he was surely not responsible as Dorian has the face of a 20 year old and the man James is looking for must be much older. . Lord Henry believes that the perfect person is one who puts physical beauty over all else. The reader is introduced to the concept of doublethink very early on with the party's main slogans, "WAR IS PEACEFREEDOM IS SLAVERYIGNORANCE IS STRENGTH". Dorian is meets one of Basil's friends Lord Henry. If the universe and reality exists only the mind, then the Party must control the universe and reality. Basil does not share opinions with Lord Henry but they are still companions. Dorian destroys the painting which ends his own life as it has become such an important part of him. These slogans are truth in that, By constantly being at war and having a common enemy the people of Oceania stay united. Truth is all about perspective and this point is made in both novels. At one point Winston writes in his diary, "Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four.
