The Story of an Hour and Eveline
“The story of an hour” and “Eveline” deals with a short, agonized look at a single crucial moment in the life of young women. As far back as the early 1900's not all women have been happy with their role in the society. In the stories of “The story of an hour”and “Eveline” both women had hard times in the societies they lived in, the authors tried to show positions of women in society, how they deal with their respective situations and used literary techniques to express their self. In the both stories both women faced against some problems in their society, because women were not respected like males, and they didn’t have freedom. In the story of “Eveline” the character of Eveline didn’t have a lot of independence. She got beat up by her father, she worked hard to keep the house together and to watch her siblings. There was no respect for her in the society she lived in. She wanted to go with Frank because she thought she would get respect, and have freedom; “she would not be treated as her mother had been.” Aft . . .
By using literary techniques they make the stories more interesting. In the story of “Eveline” the author used flashback to show what kind of life Eveline had “Another day, when their mother was alive they had all gone for picnic to the Hill of Howth. She remembered her father putting on her mothers bonnet to make the children laugh. Mallard was deeply disturbed by the news of her husbands death “She wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister’s arms,” she is actually overcome by a sense of joy “but she opened saw beyond that bitter moment a long procession of years to come that would belong her absolutely. ” Also she used foreshadowing when Mrs. Kate Chopin the author of “The story of an hour” made us believe that Mrs. Mallards sister told her “Louise, open the door! I beg; open the door–you will make yourself ill. Mallard had a good life there were people to protect her. ” Also the author used irony when in the point of the story the author made us believe that Eveline was going to new world with but she didn’t go. Still today in some countries women doesn’t have rights, stories like this show that everyone should be equal like the philosopher John Locke said. The women didn’t have independence when these stories were written. In the society only married or widowed women were respected. And she opened and spreads her arms out to them in welcome. There are some differences between two women Mrs.
