Imperialism in America
To gauge the United States as an Imperialistic government, you have to first define several key parts of the question. First of all, what is Imperialism? The dictionary defines it as "the policy of extending a nation's authority by territorial acquisition or by the establishment of economic and political hegemony over other nations", which means that it is the practice of expansion and control, whether through peaceable means or otherwise. So to apply this to the United States would be saying that we are expanding our borders beyond that with which we started. This is a difficult thing to gauge with the United States because since the very beginning of our history we have been a conquering nation, an expanding empire. Truthfully, what did we start with? We started with nothing, and everything that has been gained thus far has been through the expelling of others, most prominently the Indians. The United States has been built on the territory of others since the time of the first colonists, and we are still expanding, now in the interests of oil, and especially we are expanding into the Middle East. It's a difficult thing to show unless one explains the path taken to the present point, and to do so one must look at the history of I
The newly arriving British, and soon to be American, settlers evicted the Indians wherever they arrived. So in relation to our conquest of the Middle East, the Mask of Sincerity comes into play immediately. With fifty men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want" (Zinn 1). Trade with oriental countries has increased 3 fold over ten years, and now accounts for nearly a quarter of our trade. About the time of the industrial revolution England underwent a great expansion. Like the Romans, the English, the Turks, like any Imperialistic country, it eventually fails and goes into a downward spiral. The ancient Romans and the US are so similar in fact ( in government and other things), that I believe that our downfall could be very similar to theirs. Most notably France, Japan, and yes, the United States (Smith 35). This shows that amendments can be made to the most important document in the United States, in order to further the wealth and territory of the United States; more Imperialism. Coincidence that support for the war there was so easily gained? It's hard to tell for sure, with so little exposure from the government and the companies that support it, but it doesn't seem like a far-fetched idea (web4net. The greatest countries in the world have been empires. With the new inventions like the steam engine and the railroad, and most specifically the advancements in the mills and factories, the output Britain was generating went far beyond what it could sell at home (Smith 11). When you set up the government, you control the country. There is a consistency to the names and countries associated with Imperialism. Afghanistan is one of the poorest countries in the world, with one of the largest natural oil deposits of any country.
