The Godfather
"The Godfather" is the beginning and ending of a mafia novel. It's not the only wonderful book about organized crime, but it's the richest and grandest. It looks inside a family of organized crime so deeply, that we don't think of them as bad guys per say. They have respect and are behaved in a way that is very elegant. But there is also a bad part of their behavior in which they act to take actions upon them selves even if it is against the law. It is a highly known fact that the main focus of a stereotypical Mafia family should center around the use of violence. "The Godfather" as well as "The Last Don" are two novels which hold true to this focus and are interestingly enough both written by the same author: the late Mario Puzo. Although being written more than twenty-five years apart, the two novels almost mirror each other throughout. For instance, near the beginning of each book the only daughter of each family gets married. Aside from that we also see one son die in each novel as well as the husband of the family's only daughter to be killed by the family. Throughout all these instances the only thing dissimilar regarding the two Mafia families is their reasons for violence. A family's use of violence
is determined by how much power they hold. In this essay it is important to know that the main and top character is Don Vito Corleone, known as the Godfather, he is referred to as 'The Don' in the novel, this is a title given to the head of a mafia family. Main characters such as the Don are more developed in the novel than in the movie. In the movie this scene is completely different. Not only does he describe how Vito became the Godfather, but also goes into the details of the earlier Mafia wars in New York City". Short, dark, slender, living in the strange Moorish-looking village of Corleone in Sicily, he had been born Vito Andolini, but when strange men came to kill the son of the man they had murdered, his mother sent the young boy to America to stay with friends. "Mario Puzo develops the character of Vito much more fully in the book. Don Vito Corleone emerges as a sympathetic and even admirable character; during the entire novel, this lifelong professional criminal does nothing of which we can really disapprove. This quote is such a true statement; Vito's character could not be explained and developed any better than Puzo does in the novel. When reading the novel The Godfather, a vision of how the characters look is formed, the role they play and their surroundings. Another character is Johnny Fontane, the Don's godson, he is a singer who was struggling to become a star until the Don gave him the break he was looking for to become famous. It shows Vito's mother sending him to America to protect him, but when he arrives in the New York port, the customs officer is too busy to read Vito's papers and automatically gives him the name Vito Corleone. When a novel becomes a great seller it is usually a target for a great movie. In "The Godfather", the main purpose behind all killing and violence can be directly related to attaining power.
