True Lies
Some argue that movies such as, “Saving Private Ryan”, and “Schindler’s List” that are loosely based on historical fact provide an inaccurate account of history. Others say they provide people of the present with a look into the past. Whether or not the historical facts of these movies are one hundred percent correct, they do serve a purpose other than pure entertainment. Movies like Brave Heart and Gladiator that attract large audience create interest in people about the past. A movie has the ability to plant a seed in a persons mind. Curiosity is human nature. When we find something that interests us we are motivated to find out all we can on the topic. Curiosity is one of the biggest driving forces of human beings. From the time we are able to explore the world around us it makes us do what we do. When we watch small children we can recognize the role curiosity plays. When something catches the attention of a child, he or she focuses on it and the can be entertained by it for hours, or even days. In the same way if a teenager or a young adult goes to see “Schindler’s List” with little or no prior knowledge of the Holocaust, more often than not that person is going to be intrigued and compelled to find . . .
Movies that are loosely based on historical fact are important because they attract people who otherwise would not be interested in such subjects. In this case the idea of curiosity leading to knowledge would be working in the opposite way. Movies like Saving Private Ryan, Schindler’s List”, Gladiator, and Braveheart create a spark and people’s mind that in many cases causes that person to search for a deeper understanding. When people can see past the historical accuracy of a movie and see what the movie really represents, then they begin to delve into the expansive world of history. Watching a movie may help motivate that person, but so could reading a book, or seeing an advertisement on television. When a person goes back and researches World War II they will find that story of Private Ryan is not true, but it becomes irrelevant because they will find thousands of stories that are nearly identical. She didn’t remember anything but she told me that he had left his job at general electric and his girlfriend, who was my grandmother, to go fight for his country when he was nineteen years old just like the young men in the movie. History is a written record of the victories and mistakes of human existence. To use something that deviates from that collection to teach would be teaching inaccurate information. For example, someone who saw the movie “Schindler’s List” may decide that the ideals of the Nazis interest them. Watching the movie serves its purpose when that purpose forgets the movie and starts to learn the magnitude of what really happened. In the most extreme cases impressionable people, who take a movie of this kind as fact may decide to exhibit the destructive behavior that the historical aspect of the movie is attempting to warn against. This created a stir amongst the class.
