Prospero: Humanity and Captives

In Shakespeare’s, “The Tempest” Prospero lost his humanity and captives by forcing and manipulating Ariel but in the end he regains it by forgiving the people who hurt him the most instead of trying to get revenge.

Prospero loses all his humanity and captives by being forceful and manipulative towards Ariel. When he told Ariel, “Thou best know’st what torment I did find thee in thy groans did make wolves howl and penetrate the breasts of every-angry years. It was torment to lay upon the damned, which Sycorax count not again undo. It was mine art when I arrived and heard thee, that made a gape the pine, and let thee

. . .
Prospero’s humanity and captives were also slipping away from him because he was forcing Ariel to work for him and feel in-depth. 349-351) His humanity and captives fall away from him because he is using Ariel’s memory to induce guilt on him. And also because he is trying to let bygones be bygones and move on with his life since he has returned after years if being trapped on the island. 346-354) He was losing his humanity, captives, and dehumanizing Ariel when he forced him to remember the torment of what happened to him because Ariel has served his time and should be free of Prospero. Another example of Prospero regaining his humanity and captives is when he is telling his brother, Alonzo, “For you my most wicked sir, whom to call brother would infect my mouth. Prospero’s humanity and captives slip further away from him when he finishes threatening Ariel by telling him, “If thou more murmur’st I will rend an oak and peg thee in his knotty entrails till thou hast howl’d away a dozen winters.

Prospero regains his humanity and captives by being forgiving and trying to forget the past. He also regains his humanity and captives because instead of seeking revenge on Caliban he is letting go of the past and moving on with his life.
