A Comparative Study of Selected Theories of Personality

             1. Compare and Contrast the following:
             Ø Roger's Person-Centered Theory
             Ø Maslow's Humanistic and Need Theory
             The similarities of the three Personality theories are striking basically because of their humanistic nature. Like most theories, Freud's influences remained prominent but are all less pessimistic compared to Psychoanalysis. The structure of personality, though not emphasized, has given way to the "consistency of change". In the development of personality, experience plays a vital role. In both Maslow's and Murray's theory, the needs of an individual is recognized and given importance. Most of all, the concept that the dynamism of a personality is ever changing and its functions are interrelated, is the groundwork of these theories.
             2. In what ways can Maslow's characteristics of self-actualizing people be realized?
             Self-actualization is characterized mainly by a feeling of contentment, fulfillment or satisfaction in life. People who are not primarily motivated by the basic needs and are guided by intrinsic values are, according to Maslow, self-actualized.
             3. In this IT era, how could humanistic theories apply? What can it do in terms of making people more human?
             Humanism placed human beings in the highest level among all organisms and many has a distorted way of perceiving such concept. The feeling of superiority have actually "dehumanized" humans to the most deficient product of nature. Confusion between power and success have mislead many to indulge to this materialistic world. Humanistic theories may be too idealistic but these ideals serves as a standard for human's to achieve greater goals.
