Is Schindlers List an Accurate Representation?
Schindlers list, it is one of the many historical films, like Titanic which impressed audiences world wide. It received record gate reciepts throughout America and the rest of the world and undoubtly owes its success of particularly the western world in the horrific events concerning the treatment of the Jewish nation of Europe by Hitler and his nazi party during the second world war.Not only did it achieve maximum audience appeal but it also reaped the beneifits of being such a supererb film by picking up 7 oscars, 3 golden globes and y other prestigious awards. The film depicts the heroic actions of Oskar Schindler, a German war profiteer, who because of his fundamental humanity and great courage saved more then 1,100 Jews from death in the holocaust. The film was directed by Steven Speilberg, a highly popular figure who has directed such huge screen plays as E.T. and Jurassic Park. Steven Speilberg is a Jew and there are some critics might suggest that the film is biased. Although, what is true is that this film is his attempt at explaining the Holocaust, it is his representation and his "historical view". This in turn does have its own reliability although it is a different type of reliability.
It has been changed for commercial reasons and therefore contains many flaws but as a reference to our studies it is very useful as it provides us with a different prospective to the Holocaust and also backs up sources we have already studied. This film is a very stereotypical movie with clear cut 'goodies' and ;baddies' played by big Hollywood ,movie stars. But not all people agree with ? One right wing revisionist historian called David Irvine completely disowns this film and anything else regarding the Holocaust or genocide in the Nazi years. It was this partnership that saved the lives of 1,100 Jews during the years of the Holocaust. He suggests that "Hushnitz did not really exist"and that "Hitler did not realise what was happening to the Jews"But we as viewers know that it is a very accurate representation as we have sources and eyewitness who back up those accounts. In conclusion I feel that the film is an accurate representation of the Holocaust to an extent but it does not tell the full story. Although the film depicts many true events and shows 'true' characters, there is still many problems with showing the Holocaust as a blockbuster film. We could argue that it was edited out a lot of very important events and perhaps forgot some others. Speilberg added these to the film to make it more entertaining and appealing to an audience. n an exceptional "novel" 'Schindler's Ark" by Thomas Keneally. It is not an authentic piece of evidence as all the characters are actors and therefore have not actually experienced any of the events depicted themselves. Because of this the film had to be commercialised a little. This film is an example of "fiction" that is a story which contains both fiction and fact.
