Fraternity
Jerry, a freshman at Midwestern University, decided to pledge a popular fraternity on campus. As part of initiation week, Jerry flagged down a local bus. When the bus driver stopped the bus and opened the door, Jerry placed his foot on the step, tied his shoe, and then thanked the driver for the use of his bus. The driver, angered by this college prank, jumped out of the driver's seat and kicked Jerry's foot sending him sprawling to the pavement. He slowly attempted to rise to his feet, looking for one of his 'friends' to help him up. His aching leg throbbed with pain if he put any weight on it.
They responded that he was just being a baby and that if he expected to join he would have to toughen up. More importantly, Jerry learned that foolish pranks not only put your own life in danger, but they inconvenience and anger those around you as well. He opened the door for Jerry to enter, and then drove away as Jerry was stepping onto the bus. He built up his courage and sheepishly asked if they would help him up. In the emergency room, the doctor said that his leg was heavily bruised but that there was no permanent damage and it was not broken. Flushing with anger and embarrassment, Jerry told his 'friends' that his leg might be broken. Stumbling, Jerry slipped into the street and the back wheels of the bus ran over his foot. fraternity members watching the stunt couldn't have been having a better time. Smirking, they started to lift him up and just as he put all his weight on them for support, they let go, dropping him once again to the pavement. Shortly, the laughing students came over to congratulate Jerry. Limping heavily, Jerry made his way to a phone where he contacted his roommate to pick him up. Encouraged by these words, Jerry entertained the possibility that the fraternity members may have been right and that he had just been scared by the fall. The next day, Jerry boarded the bus to head over to the fraternity house. Looking back on the day, Jerry also decided that once he became a member they would treat him with more respect.
