The Joy Luck Club: Novel vs. Movie
The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan was a very intriguing and exhilarating novel. I was very curious to see how the moviemakers were going to transform this amazing novel onto the big screen while still maintaining Amy Tan's original themes and concepts. Now, obviously, there are going to be a lot of similarities, considering the movie was based on the novel, but what I seemed to notice was the differences. Some of the major differences that I noticed included the varying formats of the movie from the novel, the organization of the stories, and the specifics of the given stories. These differences didn't have a major effect on the movie's similarities to the book, but they do show how the book, originally, was better than the movie. In the book the various stories were much more organized when compared to the movie. The differences were the format in each, the organization of the book compared to the movie, and finally, the specifics which the film tended to go into. In the book various headings and pages were used to show distinct separations between the stories, creating a well-organized and easy to follow novel. In the movie they presented all of the Woo family's stories at once, then all of the St. The first difference that I noticed was the different format of the movie as compared to the book. In the book the stories were arranged with on story of the Woo family, followed by one of the St. Overall, however, I felt that the movie did portray an accurate account of the novel written by the Asian-American author, Amy Tan. The movie I felt seemed to include more detail than the novel did when concerning all the different stories included in both. However, I can understand this since it is a lot easier to show a picture of something than it is to describe every detail of it in words. In my opinion, however, the movie failed to create this separation and I felt was letting all the stories run together creating a mass of information that was difficult to take in and fully comprehend. The final, major difference that I noticed with watching the movie was the specifics that the movie went into. While watching this film I picked up on several key differences between the film and the novel, upon which it was based upon. d under the title based on the novel written by, but also (if I recall correctly) as an executive producer and a couple other key, decision-making roles that helped this movie to be as similar to the novel as possible. The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan was not only an invigorating novel but it was also, later, made into a very interesting motion picture.
