Alexander The Great

One of the greatest conquerors of all time is Alexander the Great of Macedonia. He was born in the year 356, in Pella, the ancient capital city of Macedonia. His father was Philip, the king of Macedonia, and his mother was Olympias, the princess of Epirus. His father, Philip, saw potential in Alexander, so he hired Leonidas. Leonidas trained Alexander physically, by using exercise and a lean diet. Alexander learned many military skills, such as running, riding a horse bareback, driving chariots, and the ability to use swords and spears. As well as teaching Alexander physical skills, he was taught personally by the Greek philosopher Aristotle. Aristotle taught Alexander logical thinking, and also instilled a love for the works of Homer, a Greek poet. The Iliad was one of Alexander's favorite pieces of literature, and he memorized all the lines of the epic. Alexander also studied the fields of geography, ethics, philosophy, politics, healing, botany, and zoology. At the age of sixteen, the tutoring with Aristotle was completed, and Alexander joined his father's army. Alexander performed other duties to help his father

After the Macedonians begged for forgiveness, he threw a huge feast in their honor. In the first battle with the Persian army, their leader, Darius III didn't bother going to the fight in person. He was out to conquer the rest of the world. When Alexander was seventeen, Philip left Alexander in charge of Macedonia while he went to attend state matters in Greece. Using smart tactics, Alexander forced King Porus to surrender. Darius III was found dead, stabbed by one of his own soldiers, Bessus. Another way was by discharging old and injured veterans in his army. He transformed the culture of the world at his time, and he spread Greek culture and ideas. He would replace these men with Persian boys. Gaugamela was a decisive battle as Alexander used battle tactics to send Darius and his troops into retreat.
