Analysis of Cory Booker

The most intriguing metropolitan mayoral race occurred May 14, 2002, when incumbent Sharpe James was sought an unprecedented fifth term. However, James would not be vying against the typical candidate. The 66-year-old James was about to face the fight of his political life thanks to freshmen City Councilman Cory Booker. Booker grew up in the wealthy suburb of Bergen County, New Jersey. He was named Mr. Football of New Jersey in 1987 and attended Stanford University on an athletic scholarship. In 1992, he traveled to Oxford on a Rhodes scholarship. Upon his return to the U.S. he attended Yale Law School. Instead of embarking on a high paying law career Booker decided to move to Newark, New Jersey and become an activist for black residents whom he believed were being supplanted by the inadequate administration of Mayor Sharpe James. In 1999, Booker gained national attention by fasting and camping out next to a series of abject housing projects for ten days. He was attempting to draw the public's attention to the lack of police protection for the law-abiding tenants from gang members and drug dealers (Booker, 2002). Soon afterwards, Booker lived in a trailer for five months where each night he parked on street corners th

However, I believe Booker was able to leave an indelible impression on the people of Newark, which will enable him to win the mayoral election in 2006. Another positive aspect of Bookers campaign was his use of the media. However, Booker was able to attract a large amount of young voters and Latino American immigrants, who had no union to James. To facilitate increased economic opportunities for "Newarkers", I will foster job-training programs that lead to real opportunities in Newark businesses. We will be a city that nurtures entrepreneurs, who will in turn continue to enrich our city (Booker, 2002)This message did a great job of informing the voters what Booker meant by Renaissance for Newark and it helped build an image of him in the mind of the voters. I will aggressively support local business ownership by making sure they have access to city projects and capital and technical support. In addition to The Friends of Cory Booker for Mayor, Slate was able to assist Booker in setting up an additional fund raising committee. Jesse Jackson made it well known that directly upon graduating from Yale Law School Booker became a member of the Newark City Council. To my utter chagrin, my predications were wide of the mark, about negative seven percent wide to be exact. (Burlough, 2002) After analyzing the flaws of Cory Booker's campaign, I decided to examine his strengths. (Booker, 2002)The Cory Booker website was in a league of its own. The volunteers were young and earnest. (Bynoe, 2002) A sad reason, which contributed to Booker's loss, was his socio-economic background. Each campaigned for Booker calling him the "right thing".
