Comparison essay: The Godfather vs The Last Don

Every where in the world there is organized crimes happening. Citizens dieing over drugs and money. The hardest part of the crimes is to try to keep a steady pace and a quiet business so no one suspects anything. "A lawyer with his briefcase can steal more than a hundred men with guns." This quote is stated by Mario Puzo and describes organized criminals that in the two novels this essay will be comparing and contrasting. Mario Puzo is an Italian writer who has objected and used the life of criminal families in most of his books. The Last Don and The Godfather are both written by Mario Puzo. In the two novels there is a common theme, setting and the authors writing style is clearly shown. Both novels show the use of brains as a way to make money over using violence and force which is demonstrated by the quote above. One can only be responsible for their action but not their mind, and freedom can only take ones mind so far that their no longer responsible for their measures. In The Godfather through out the book the most important theme is freedom. At one point in the book, there is a meeting with all head bosses from all over the country. Don Corleone explains that they are free to live by there own rules, and are not require

Also, the writing style makes the reader want to keep going because of how quickly the characters can change. Pippi says that "Once you through out the body out side the city they would never find out who did it" (Last Don, pg 209" Another major setting shift takes place when he goes to Las Vegas. Conversely in The Last Don the reader gets an idea that the protagonist Don Clericuzio is person who has no feelings for anyone. The odd phone call here and there takes place to other cities or countries, but never does the actual setting of the story change drastically. Once again this is another example of how Mario Puzo grabs the reader through his writing style. It is understandable why The Last Don was more narration due to the fact that there was a lot of history and explanation to do for the reader to understand what was going on. For instance, in The Godfather, when Corleone was alive, his son, Michael Corleone, never wanted to take part in the family business. However, in The Last Don this is very different. He has hopes and dreams and he mention it and says that "I only have one wish that my children will grow up as honest American citizens" (Godfather pg. This leaves the reader with a constant feeling of suspense. One of the most fascinating things about The Godfather is the contradiction at the heart of it. The Last Don and The Godfather are very alike and very different at the same time in regards to there writing style. One would think that since these two books were written by the same author, there wouldn't be too many differences but this essay believes it has demonstrated otherwise. Another similarity in the style of writing is both novels do progress in chronological order.
