             From posters on the wall, to the money in their pockets, members of the Outer Party never escape the omniscient stare of Big Brother. The ministries emphasizing their power over the people through their slogans: War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength. In the world of Oceania, these make complete sense because they are all forms of manipulation executed by the Party. However, could these ideas the slogans present apply to modern society?
             Winston writes in his diary that, "If there is hope it lies in the proles" (60) because they make up 85% of Oceania's population. Although free from the scrutinizing eye of a telescreen and corrective actions of Thought Police, many of the proles endured heavy physical work (61) and all lived in incredibly poor living conditions. Along with this, Winston also writes in his diary, "Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after the have rebelled they cannot become conscious" (61). In this passage Winston realizes the proles do not understand the power they posses, and they never will because the Party caters to the proles' demands. However, if and when a rebellion took place, only after successfully overthrowing the government would the proles understand the manipulation the Party staged for so long.
             The idea of war bringing peace is another form of manipulation used by the Party. The book of Goldstein states the idea that the sole purpose of war is to "keep the wheels of industry turning without increasing the real wealth of the world" (157). It is also written that, "In principle the war effort is always so planned as to eat up any surplus that might exist after meeting the bare needs of the population. In practice the needs of the population are always underestimated, with the result that there is a chronic shortage of half the necessities of life; but this is looked on as an advantage.
