Miranda

The following essay includes a concise introduction of Miranda, and a profound elucidation of the gist of the story. Characters will be discussed as the twist and turns of the story. Also there will follow an attempt of interpretation of the ending. Afterwards I would like to give my view on the dilemma of abortion.
Miranda is an 18-year old girl that moves to Boston to go to school. She has to leave her parents and her boyfriend with whom she is deeply in love. In Boston she learns that she is pregnant and contacts her boyfriend. They start planning a wedding, but Miranda's parents persuade them to cancel the dreams of becoming parents.
Obviously Miranda moved to emancipate from her parents, but when she gets pregnant she seeks their advice. But their involving destroys her morale independence.
The character of Miranda develops emotionally throughout the story. In the beginning we think of her as naive, which we also do in the end. But her character develops her feelings for whatever is inside her; she gets aware of that there is a responsibility.
In the beginning it all seems so wonderful and fairytale-like (Line 6-10: ... and she took his arm as they walked out to the driveway, to his old and dented Plymouth parked behind the corvette. They went to dinner and then drove and stopped on Mulholland Drive. She stroked his thick curly hair and kissed him...), but in the end she must learn that there is hardship and adversity in the world.
She is not the defiant daughter, but when abortion is mentioned as a way to handle the problem she gets sick (Line 193-194: She would have cried, but she felt dry inside, she was tired and she knew the night was ended). Abortion simply does not fit into the perfect world of Miranda.
Miranda's boyfriend Michael is the typical sonny-boy (L. 3-4: He was tall, he was tanned from his summer work...). He is studying law school and eventually will end up as a betrayal senator one day. ...
